FMX #1 Blog

     Hi everyone. My name is Carson Tomey. I am a 19-year-old sophomore here at UT and am excited to be taking FMX this semester. When I started at UT, I was a business management. My first two semesters were very difficult for me as most of my classes had to do with math in some way, even if they were not considered math classes. I have always struggled with math my entire life, no matter how much time and effort I put into it. I am a very hands on, project oriented person. After taking so many exam heavy and math related courses, I realized this major was not for me. Mid way through last semester I decided to switch to AD/PR major and start taking less exam heavy and more project oriented classes. Part of me felt guilty for "giving up" on my major because it was so difficult. However, I have learned that I am expanding my interests and trying new things can be a very good thing! This is my first semester in the COC with classes geared towards project based learning, and it is going awesome.     

    I know a few people that have taken FMX in the past, and they all say that it is a very fun class because you get to work on your own proejcts and be creative with it, and that is exactly what I am looking for. I have always been very in touch with new technology, but I have only scratched the surface. I am looking to dive deeper into different types of software in this class in order to maximize the usage of what they have to offer. I am ready to be doing lots of hands-on projects and assignments which is how I learn most efficiently.

 Artist Statement:  I wanted to base my calligram specifically off what is going on in my life right now as I am doing the project. Senior year of high school was a very low point for me, and I felt extremely grown out of my hometown and the people in it. As stated in my letter to my future self, moving to Tampa has changed my life. I feel like I have found myself and found a new home at the same time, and that is the absolute best feeling ever. I truly feel more at home here than I do when I go back to my hometown. While my past and childhood are extremely dear and important to me, I continue to view living here in Tampa as a new opportunity that generates excitement for me every single day to look forward to what things may come my way in the future. I feel like my calligram really represents this story and what it means to me. Somewhere

  When assigned to place myself into a scene of a movie/show using adobe photoshop, this was almost an immediate and easy decision to do the show "Outer Banks" . I have always loved this show and felt very connected with the characters and their lifestyle in the movie because I have spent a lot of time throughout my life in the OBX. Placing myself into this scene felt natural for me because I am always happiest at the beach or by the water and with my friends and this is exactly the vibe of the scene shot that I used for this project.
